A quick guide to the fruits of the Spirit
Paul’s list in Galatians 5:22–23 names nine beautiful qualities that grow in believers as the Holy Spirit leads them: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Think of them as a single cluster: the fruit of a Spirit-led life. Below is a simple definition of each fruit and one or two practical ways to live it today.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22–23
If you want these qualities to flourish, start small, stay consistent, and keep close to Christ. Try a tiny daily rhythm like one verse a day and a two-sentence prayer. See ideas in our How to Start a Tiny Scripture Habit (That Actually Sticks).
The gospel isn’t the ABCs of the Christian faith; it’s the A to Z.
Timothy Keller's sermon What Is the Gospel, 2003
Love
What it is: Seeking another’s good, even when it costs you.
Practice it: Send a short note of encouragement to someone carrying a heavy load. Choose to forgive a minor offense and pray blessing for the person.
We love because he first loved us. 1 John 4:19
Joy
What it is: Deep gladness rooted in God’s presence, not in circumstances.
Practice it: Begin a gratitude list with three things each morning. Share a story at dinner of where you noticed God’s goodness today.
Peace
What it is: Wholeness and calm because God holds you.
Practice it: Before opening your phone, breathe slowly and pray Psalm 46:10. If conflict arises, aim to listen first, then respond gently.
Be still, and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10
Patience
What it is: Steady endurance with people and circumstances.
Practice it: When a delay frustrates you, pray for the person in front of you. Set a timer for two minutes to pause before replying to a tense message.
Kindness
What it is: A warm, active posture of compassion.
Practice it: Hold the door, write a thank-you, or check in on a neighbor. Choose words that heal rather than score points.
Goodness
What it is: Moral beauty and integrity shaped by God’s character.
Practice it: Do the right thing when no one is watching. Give anonymously to meet a specific need at church or in your community.
Faithfulness
What it is: Reliable trust in God that shows up as reliability toward others.
Practice it: Keep your promises, even the small ones. Put a reminder on your calendar to pray consistently for one person this week.
We live by faith, not by sight. 2 Corinthians 5:7
Gentleness
What it is: Strength under control, expressed with humility.
Practice it: Lower your volume in disagreement. Ask one curious question before stating your view.
Self-control
What it is: Spirit-empowered discipline that says “yes” to what brings life and “no” to what does not.
Practice it: Set a screen-free hour each evening. Choose one habit to fast from this week and replace it with prayer.
How the fruits grow
The fruits of the Spirit do not grow by sheer willpower. They grow as we remain with Jesus, receive the Spirit’s help, and practice these small, ordinary acts of obedience.
I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5
Relying on God has to begin all over again every day as if nothing had yet been done.
C. S. Lewis, Malcolm: Chiefly on Prayer
Consider weaving scripture into your day. Wear a verse, set a lock screen with a promise, or read the gospel of John slowly. Keep exploring God’s love in John 3:16: So Loved Scripture Reflection.
Simple weekly rhythm to nurture growth
Sunday: Worship and rest.
Midweek: Read Galatians 5:22–23 and choose one fruit to focus on.
Daily: Short prayer: “Holy Spirit, grow your fruit in me today.”
To keep your practice sustainable, try one tiny step at a time. Our community often starts with a two-minute reading and a one-sentence journal entry.
Live what you wear
At The Faith, we believe beauty can become devotion. When you carry scripture close, it helps you remember whose you are and how you are called to love. May these fruits of the Spirit take root in you and bless everyone around you.
